SUITE FOR SAXOPHONE ENSEMBLE

xxxxx

The Suite is based on Dido’s Lament from Henry Purcell’s 1608 opera, Dido and Aeneas. The opening Proclamation movement masks the lament with joyous, humorous outbursts and rhythmic surprises. The second movement is based on the traditional Sicilienne rhythm in 6/8 time, and it projects a lilting, pastoral mood. This is immediately followed by a four-part Chorale with Purcell’s original melody stated in the sopranino and soprano saxophones. The piece requires mature rhythmic skills.  An alternate soprano part may be substituted for sopranino.  Approximate duration 9:30.
